Ultrasonic vs Tumescent Liposuction

Liposuction is a minor surgical treatment used on areas of the body containing excess pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.  In women, the most common treatment areas are in the abdomen, thighs, knees, and under the arms near the breast.  In men, common treatment areas are in the abdomen, chest, and midriff area (love handles).  Both men and women benefit from liposuction performed in the neck and chin areas.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, liposuction is the third most common cosmetic surgical procedure performed in the United States.  In 2006, the latest figure shows over 300,000 of these procedures were performed nationwide.  There are many forms of liposuction, but the most common among them are tumescent liposuction, and ultrasonic liposuction.  Many physicians use different words like lipoplasty and liposculpture, but unless it has ultrasound appended to it, the procedure is most likely tumenscent liposuction.

The standard liposuction procedure has been used in the U.S. since the 1970s and is still the most common option today.  In this procedure, a solution of saline and lidocaine is injected into the area to be treated.  This helps anesthetize the skin and increase the space between the fat cells for easy removal.  The amount of fluid injected is approximately three to four times the amount of fat that is to be removed.

The fat and fluid is then extracted by the use of a small vacuum tube called a cannula.  Depending on the area being treated, the procedure can take up to an hour.  Once the fat is removed, additional procedures like abdominoplasty, thighplasty, or facelift can be performed to tighten up loose skin.

This procedure is very similar to tumescent liposuction, but includes the use of a small ultrasonic device inserted and manipulated by the surgeon.  The ultrasonic waves break up the fat cells and emulsify them for easier removal through the suction device.

Determining which procedure is used is based on factors like doctor preferences and your specific body types and aesthetic goals.  Clinical studies conducted to find out which procedure work best are still inconclusive.  One study by Journal Watch seems to indicate that the ultrasonic liposuction actually caused more damage to blood vessels and did not show any major improvements over the standard tumescent procedure.

However, that does not mean that ultrasonic liposuction is never a good idea this is just one study.  One area of the body may benefit more by the use of the ultrasonic assistance than other areas.  It is best to discuss liposuction options with a qualified and experienced cosmetic surgeon.

The best candidates for liposuction are non-smoking adults who are generally healthy and just have trouble areas that need to be addressed.  Diet and exercise after liposuction treatment are still encouraged to maintain an optimal appearance.

Liposuction procedures are not a weight loss solution.  Only about five liters of fat, which is approximately ten pounds, can safely be removed during a session.  Liposuction is more of a body sculpting procedure used to remove stubborn fat deposits.

Like all surgical procedures, liposuction can cause complications including, skin necrosis (dead skin), fluid imbalance, lidocaine toxicity and thromboembolism.  These complications may arise regardless of what type of liposuction procedure is used.  To minimize these complications it is best to seek out a qualified, board certified, cosmetic surgeon who is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Smartlipo – Modern Liposuction Surgery

liposuction surgery

Most men and women want to look young and attractive. But many of them have those stubborn areas of fat that just won’t go away, even with a healthy diet and a steady exercise routine. Liposuction is an effective procedure that eradicates excessive stubborn fat from specific areas of the body. A recent and exciting new development in liposuction surgery is – an innovative technique designed to permanently remove surplus fat cells. It does not just take out the fat, but also enhances body contour and tightens the skin.

SmartLipo – This helps patients lose a size or two with minimum incision and minimum downtime. While SmartLipo has some drawbacks, it wins over conventional liposuction methods in terms of safety and effectiveness. The treatment is non-invasive and often local anesthesia is enough to carry out this procedure. Recovery time is brief, with many patients returning to work in a few days. You are the best candidate for this treatment, if you are healthy and physically fit, but have trouble areas that don’t respond to diet and exercise.

Approved by the FDA, is the only method that makes use of a dual platform laser MPX, which blends the properties of two wavelengths to melt fat and tighten skin. The operating surgeons are able to alternate between the two, depending on the skin quality and body type of the patient.

Choosing the right surgeon is an important part of the overall process of undergoing SmartLipo treatment. With SmartLipo, the modern liposuction surgery, you will experience far greater results than with any other traditional liposuction method.

SmartLipo vs. Liposuction Surgery: Which One Should You Get?

liposuction surgery

Are you thinking about improving your appearance? Would you like to get rid of your excess body fat? If this is you, you might be interested in getting liposuction surgery. But before getting a procedure, it is first important that you know what to expect about the surgery and how it can benefit you later on.

One of the most important things you need to be answered is whether or not you are a good candidate for the surgery. Nowadays, liposuction is the most popular type of cosmetic surgery being performed on many. There are a lot of people who get the procedure done even if they are already physically fit. These people still struggle with stubborn fat accumulation that seems to never go away. If you are one of these people, then you can be a qualified candidate for liposuction surgery.

Liposuction is generally recommended for people who are physically fit, exercise regularly, and are not over 20 pounds overweight. The reason for this is because the procedure should not be used as a tool for weight loss. For overweight people that would really want to lose weight, it is recommended they lose the excess weight first before getting the surgery to get rid of the smaller fat deposits which do not respond to exercise and diet.

The most common body part where liposuction surgery is being performed is the certain body areas where stubborn fat deposits accumulate. These areas are usually the back of the knee, face, neck, thighs, and the underarms.

When getting the procedure, you should be aware that it requires a total anesthesia. But if a laser assisted liposuction surgery is preferred, an epidural or local anesthetic is required. Laser liposuction is a variety of the procedure. It is more popularly known as SmartLipo. This liposuction practice makes use of laser technology in order to remove fat cells from the small problem areas. The procedure makes use of a fine laser beam that blasts these fat cells in order to break down. After that, a liquid substance such as saline will be added to it so that the fat cells can easily be vacuumed out of your body.

If you are wondering whether or not you will notice results right away, the answer to this is no. When getting a traditional liposuction surgery procedure, there will not be a large difference for the next two to four weeks. But if you choose to get SmartLipo, there will be visible results within a week’s time.

Finesse Cosmetic Laser & Lipo Center is Now Offering CoolSculpting by Zeltiq for Non-invasive Permanent Fat Reduction and Body Contouring

Boston, MA-NH – Waltham, MA – Reduce stubborn fatty areas non-invasively with the newest technology that freezes fat cells using the CoolSculpting device by Zeltiq. Located in the metropolitan Boston area, Finesse Laser & Lipo Center is offering this unique treatment, recently approved by the FDA, to selectively eliminate fat without surgery or injections.

CoolSculpting by Zeltiq uses a process known as Cryolipolysis to freeze and permanently destroy fat cells. A non-invasive applicator placed on the skin delivers precisely controlled cooling to the treatment area specifically targeting the underlying fat, leaving the skin unaffected. The technology was developed by physicians at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital who found that fat cells are more susceptible to cold than other cells. The Zeltiq system crystallizes the fat in the cell which causes the fat cell to die. The damaged fat cells are gradually removed by the body’s metabolic processes over a two to four month period.

“We perform a lot of body contouring procedures using the Smartlipo Triplex system. Although downtime is minimal with Smartlipo, some patients cannot afford any downtime or are not willing to undergo a surgical procedure,” says Peter Kruy, M.D. of Finesse Cosmetic Laser & Lipo Center. “If the person has relatively small areas of localized fat, CoolSculpting by Zeltiq becomes an ideal solution. Each area takes about an hour to treat and the patient can immediately resume their normal activities and exercise regimens.”

Several body areas can be treated in each session while the patient reads a book, watches a movie, listens to music, or works on their laptop. No incisions, needles, pain medication, or compression garments are required. Studies have shown a 20 – 25% reduction in the treated fat layer with each treatment. Results can be seen in as little as 3 weeks, with final clearing of damaged fat cells taking up to 4 months. To get further reduction of a fat bulge, the treatment can be repeated in an area as the results are additive.

Dr. Kruy points out that “the Zeltiq procedure is not for weight loss and won’t take the place of Smartlipo laser-assisted liposuction, but it does offer a great alternative to those patients who do not want a surgical procedure but still want to safely, effectively, and permanently contour their body.”

Finesse Cosmetic Laser & Lipo Center is a Boston area cosmetic surgery center specializing in body contouring / sculpting, skincare, and cosmetic laser procedures. Liposuction in Connecticut More Effective than Non-Surgical Body Contouring

In recent years, new non-surgical body contouring treatments have entered the marketplace. These treatments advertise a slimmer shape without surgery, and while it is true that they can achieve a degree of fat reduction, the reality is that traditional liposuction remains popular for Connecticut women and men looking to improve their physique. Many people are seeking a more extensive body contouring result than can be provided through a non-surgical approach alone, at least as the technology exists today.

There are several different types of non-surgical body contouring devices for fat reduction. Some of the most widely known are ZERONA® and CoolSculpting™ by ZELTIQ™. During a CoolSculpting treatment, the fat is cooled almost to the point of freezing, permanently damaging the cells and eventually causing them to die off. The cooling effect is achieved through a cooling panel placed on the skin above the targeted area of fat. Treatment only takes an hour or two, and a Connecticut plastic surgeon offering this treatment may allow patients to read, take a nap or even work on a laptop during the procedure. In addition to requiring no surgery, CoolSculpting limits downtime, but the results are certainly not immediate – the body may take several months to remove all of the damaged fat cells.

ZERONA is another non-surgical body contouring method that is typically used to contour the midsection, waist and thighs. A series of treatments spaced out every few days over the course of 2 to 3 weeks is needed in order to achieve optimal results. The treatment works by using a low-level laser to break up the fat and encourage the body’s own natural removal of the fat. Similar to CoolSculpting, ZERONA requires little to no downtime, and patients can return to their normal activities following treatments.

Non-surgical body contouring can yield satisfying results in appropriate candidates – those who are very close to their ideal body weight yet would like to subtly improve a specific area. It is popular for the lower abdominal region as well as the “love handles” and thighs – places where fat often collects despite regular exercise and a healthy diet. In general, non-surgical body contouring is not capable of removing the amount of fat that a liposuction treatment can, and also may require several treatments for results to show.

In most cases, traditional liposuction will be able to provide better and more satisfying results than these newer non-surgical treatments, especially when more extensive reshaping of the body is the goal. Traditional liposuction is a time-tested technique that has been used for decades to contour different areas of the body. It can yield beautiful results when performed by a skilled plastic surgeon.

There are many different types of liposuction, some of which utilize lasers to help smooth and tighten the skin during treatment. Additionally, liposuction can be used on several different areas of the body, including the midsection, thighs, knees, and arms. Some Connecticut face lift specialists will use liposuction along with a neck or face lift to remove unwanted fat below the chin as well. Many non-surgical body contouring techniques cannot reduce fat in some of these areas, making liposuction a better option.

Patients interested in achieving slimmer body contours should schedule consultations with several plastic surgeons who can offer individual treatment recommendations. It is best for patients to have a good understanding of the results that can reasonably be expected from various body contouring procedures so that they can achieve a satisfying result.

What Is Tumescent Liposuction?

Tumescent liposuction has been around since the mid 1980s. But what is it, exactly? And how does it compare to other methods of liposuction?

Tumescent Liposuction Defined

Tumescent liposuction is a fat removal surgery that utilizes large volumes of highly diluted solutions of local anesthesia mixed with saline. This solution is injected into the fatty tissue and numbs the liposuction area. Invented by Jeffrey Klein, MD, this technique allows surgeons to perform liposuction with the patient fully conscious.

Tumescent liposuction is considered a major advancement that has completely changed fat removal surgery. Although patients who feel overly nervous may require a mild sedative, liposuction by tumescent solution virtually eliminates the need for general anesthesia and reduces the amount of blood lost during surgery, a common problem associated with more traditional methods of liposuction.

How Tumescent Liposuction is Performed

First, an anesthetic is injected into the skin where the incision is to be made. After the skin is nice and numb, a small incision is made in the area with a scalpel, needle, or punch. It is through this incision that the liposuction tube will be inserted. This tube is attached to a surgical vacuum, which suctions out the fat.

After widening the skin incision, a small catheter is inserted. It is through this catheter that the anesthetic or tumescent solution is administered, using either a needle or pump. After the local anesthetic has been administered, one or two liposuction tubes are inserted and the fat is sucked out.

Once the surgeon determines the procedure to be complete, a small suture or two will be placed to close the incision site. A compression bandage is then applied. After that, the patient can get dressed and go home.

Risks and Side Effects of Tumescent Liposuction

As is the case with every surgical procedure, tumescent liposuction has its risks.
The following are those most commonly reported:
• Loose skin or skin folds.
• Uneven skin, with depressions and lumps.
• Skin numbness.
• Uneven pigmentation.
• Blood clots.
• Excessive fluid retention or fluid loss.
• Infection.
• Burn or injury from ultrasound device.
• Bleeding.
• Skin discoloration.
• Pain.
• Damage to deeper tissue structures.
• Inadequate wound healing
• Deep vein thrombosis.

It is quite normal for patients to feel some form of discomfort after the numbing effect of the tumescent liposuction solution wears off. However, most patients are able to enjoy their regular activities of daily living within a few days, with the exception of exercise, which is not recommended until a week or two after the surgery.

Bariatric Surgery Programs In Ohio: Part Of The Fight Against Obesity

bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery programs both nationally and internationally are fighting a growing epidemic of obesity and its health consequences. The numbers are staggering. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that more than a billion people around the world are overweight and as many as 300 million of them are obese. It is the result of consuming foods that are high in energy but poor in nutrients with high levels of sugar and saturated fat combined with a decreasing amount of exercise. Obesity rates have already tripled since the 1980’s in parts of North America, Europe and even the Middle East and China.

If you are overweight or obese some of the potential consequences could give cause for concern because obesity poses a major risk for certain types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and several other chronic diseases. In the United States, for example, more than 23 Americans already have diabetes and that number is expected to double by 2034. That doubling is anticipated as a result of an aging population combined with increasing obesity among the general population. As the problem becomes more acute, more overweight people are seeking bariatric surgery programs.

Since so many overweight people are increasingly turning to medically based solutions for long-term sustainable weight loss, it is important to understand what a bariatric practice is and what it is not. Bariatric surgery programs are not simple weight loss programs with commercially prepared meals and regularly scheduled weigh-ins. At its foundation, a bariatric practice is a medical solution to weight loss providing a comprehensive program that includes surgery. These bariatric surgery programs are directed by a surgeon(s) and supported by a team of professionals which often includes nutritionists, exercise physiologists and nurse practitioners who work with the patients to achieve and maintain weight loss goals. While a simple weight loss program can be entered into by just about anyone who has an interest in losing weight, a program that includes surgery is for patients who are morbidly obese or who have coexisting medical conditions that make losing significant amounts of weight medically vital. These bariatric surgery programs involve a lifetime commitment to losing weight and a lifestyle change for the patient.

One of the most popular options in bariatric surgery programs is the Lap-Band® System procedure because it can lead to significant amounts of weight loss over time. That loss of weight can help reverse or correct many of the serious medical conditions associated with obesity including diabetes. One study published by the Journal of American Medical Association stated that 73 percent of patients who had contracted type 2 diabetes in the last two years were able to resolve their condition following bariatric surgery. In many cases, patients with hypertension can lower their blood pressure enough to discontinue medication following significant weight loss after gastric banding procedures.

The American Society for Bariatric surgery declared that approximately 220,000 bariatric surgeries were performed in 2008; that compares to 205,000 performed in 2007. More surgical options have come available over the past decade to provide safer and alternative methods to assist in the fight against obesity. Laparoscopic methods have become more popular to allow less invasive procedures and quicker recovery for weight loss patients. And the fight continues as bariatric surgery programs conduct ongoing medical trials continue to evaluate standard requirements for surgical weight loss options.

How Much Fat Can Be Removed with Liposuction Surgery?

liposuction surgery

Liposuction surgery, the surgical procedure which removes excess fatty deposits in various areas of the body, has made great advances since its invention more than three decades ago. The latest laser-assisted techniques enable a more targeted and controlled removal of fat and offer better body contouring effects. One of the questions that most men and women going in for the procedure ask is: ‘how much fat can be removed with liposuction surgery’? The answer lies in the technique used as well as patient safety considerations.

The principle of liposuction is to remove fat through very small incisions using cannulas. The cannulas enable the suctioning out of the excess fat cells. Any kind of liposuction, conventional or laser-assisted, works best on localized fat deposits that cannot be removed through diet and exercise. The goal of the treatment is to achieve aesthetic body sculpting, rather than achieve dramatic weight loss through the removal of 100 per cent of the fat. The best results are obtained on areas of the body areas which have good muscle tone and skin elasticity.

Patient safety is an important factor in . The safety guidelines of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons state that only 5 liters (11 pounds) of fat should be removed during one liposuction procedure. Large-volume liposuction, involving more than five liters of fat is a complex multi-stage procedure and is performed in a hospital.

One of the greatest advantages of the latest modalities in laser liposuction is that they are designed to liquefy and extract the right amount of fat from almost all the targeted areas of the body precisely and safely.

The laser-assisted liposuction procedure uses energy from laser wavelengths to liquefy the fat cells. SmartLipo Triplex, the latest technique, offers high definition body sculpting. This workstation makes use of three separate laser wavelengths (1440, 1064 and 1320 nm) which allow for greater fat absorption compared to conventional methods.

These minimally micro-cannulas permit a more gradual, targeted, and controlled removal of fat, enabling the surgeon to contour the area more effectively.

The main advantages of SmartLipo Triplex are

• Effective laser-enabled fat reduction
• Excellent tissue coagulation and skin tightening effects
• Done under local anesthesia
• Shorter treatment time and less downtime
• Safe and quick
• No scarring
• High-definition body sculpting

SmartLipo Triplex comes with SmartSense™ with ThermaGuide™ which is a system facilitating safe and uniform energy delivery to melt the fat cells.

A challenging surgical procedure, liposuction should be performed by a skilled surgeon using the latest techniques to ensure the best outcome. Safety is ensured if the procedure is carried out in an AAASF-accredited plastic surgery center. How much fat the liposuction surgery can remove also depends of the patient – a person who is healthy and of normal stable weight with firm tissue would be ensured of optimal results.

Non-surgical Chin and Neck Fat Loss

As you grow older your body undergoes various changes, some evident some not so evident. The changes on your skin are the most public and cause great anxiety to most women. The double chin for example is a very common complaint. With age, a certain sagging of your muscles is inevitable and with decreased activity the condition is worsened. Many women have sleepless nights about how to get rid of their double chin and sagging skin.

Fatty deposits in your platysma muscles (muscles which start from under your and extend into your neck and shoulders) can cause a double at any point in your life but with age it is inevitable to a certain degree. But as far as the nature of problem is concerned it is only cosmetic. It is a symptom of obesity only. But the hitch is that even if you exercise and diet rigorously, the fat on your chin will take the longest time to disappear. Any one irrespective of their gender can get a double chin. Sometimes a double chin can run in a family. One course one the most obvious ways you would think of to get rid of your double chin would be to get a surgery. But it is highly advisable to first explore the non-surgical chin and neck fat loss methods.

Before you start, you have to understand that this journey would not be easy and you have stay focused and be patient without being too hard on yourself. In the Chinese system of medicine, a double chin is seen as a sign of weak lymphatic system. There are a wide range of exercises that you are to try if you are going to give non-surgical chin and neck fat loss a shot.

The key is to exercise the platysma muscles. Neck revolving exercises, opening and closing your mouth wide, exercising your jaw even by chewing gum are all useful. Besides this, you have to pay extra attention to your posture. Irrespective of whether you are sitting or standing keep your back straight and don’t let your chin droop. Then there are medical procedures like lipodissolve, mesotherapy, thermage, etc., which are all non-surgical chin and neck fat loss methods but they all have their all related risks and problems.

This said and done, the surgical option-liposuction, is the most effective. It is performed with local anesthesia. Talking exclusively in terms of your face, liposuction is used to correct problems like excessive fat in specific areas like the double chin. The procedure can be effectively combined with others like a facelift, as and when required. The layer of fat is cleanly removed and then the muscle is tightened again to restore a youthful look. But you need to keep the cost factor in mind. These surgeries are very expensive and if you are unlucky enough to get it botched then there is not much you can do.

So, if you are looking to get rid of a double chin it is recommended that you give the non-surgical chin and neck fat loss methods a try. Even though they might take time to show up they are definitely safer and cheaper.
