The Benefits Of Obesity Surgery In Virginia

A series of Italian studies has found that undergoing lap band surgery reduces a patient’s odds of dying by nearly fifty percent over an average study period of seven to eight years. Weight loss surgery can produce a sustained reduction in body weight, at a level that is very difficult to achieve with other common obesity-management strategies, stated Dr. Luca Busetto of the University of Padova. In Virginia, there are many people who can benefit from the lap band procedure, improving their and possibly saving their lives in the process.

The researchers tallied about 3,300 deaths across the studies: 2.8 percent of those who had a bariatric procedure and 9.7 percent among similar patients who did not have surgery. This translated into 45 percent lower odds of dying with bariatric surgery.
A similar benefit was found when the team looked specifically at heart-related deaths.

Compared to no surgery, the lap band provided 29 percent lower odds of heart-related death, report the researchers in the Annals of Surgery. After drastic reductions in pounds, patients tend to find that they need fewer medications for the treatment of obesity-related conditions, and that they take fewer sick days. While the cost of lap band surgery can be greater than other treatments in the short term, said Busetto, “weight loss obtained by bariatric surgery may also save money over time.”

Lap band surgery, also know as gastric banding, involves wrapping a saline-filled silicone band around the upper part of the stomach, causing patients to feel full more quickly. Saline can be added or removed, making the constriction adjustable. Compared to other weight loss procedures, gastric banding is reversible and introduces a lower chance of severe complications and even surgery-related death.

For obese individuals considering weight surgery, Busetto recommends going to a center that has the ability to perform both bypass and banding and making sure there is an honest discussion of the short- and long-term pros and cons of each procedure before choosing one. In Virginia, there are many opportunities to attend a free informational seminar, where a board-certified surgeon can address any questions and concerns.

They are best targeted by fast food chains, promoting their super-sized portions and all you can eat deals. These foods are ridiculously high in sugar content, saturated fats, white starches and carbohydrates are almost no nutrients. Sedentary lifestyle: physical activity and sedentary lifestyle is also one of the key factors for increasing the percentage of overweight / obesity. Today, young people spend most of their day working in front of the computer and then spend a significant proportion of leisure time watching television or playing computer games. Staying physically inactive leaves unused energy in the body, most of which are stored as fat and it is also against our ancient “hunter harvested” body cycle. Not surprisingly, it is observed that overweight children were higher among children, adolescents and young people who often watch TV or work most of the time on computers. Psychological factors: Many youngsters eat in response to negative emotions such as boredom, sadness or anger. Unfortunately, becoming food for the face depression can lead to obesity. Our society attaches great importance to looking a certain way. If young people do not fit this mold, they develop low self-esteem issues and body, which can lead to depression. Depression leads to increased negative emotions, which eventually leads to overeating, thus creating a vicious circle.

Obesity Crisis in America

Americans are still fat and getting fatter. However, we have slowed down are rate. For 2/3 of states, more than a quarter of adults are obese according to the Trust for America’s Health. To be obese, one must exceed a BMI of 30.

The largest offender of obesity is the southern United States. Mississippi is the fattest state in union. Over a third of people in Mississippi are considered to be obese. Of the top ten states with highest rates obesity, eight of the states belonged to the south. Adding to the trouble, the south has a high rate of diabetes and hypertension. The region is also known for having low amounts to physical activity.

However, exercise does not always correlate with exercise. This comes as a big surprise. While most of the states that have high obesity rates also have high inactivity rates, there are some exceptions. New Jersey ranks high inactivity but has a low rate of obesity.

There were only four states that landed on both the least obese and most active lists: Hawaii, Utah, Vermont, and Colorado. These results indicate lack of exercise is not the only factor contributing to the trend.

Schools are working towards reducing obesity in children. Nineteen states require nutritional standards of school food to be above what is required federally. The requirements are not just for lunch but for snacks and drinks sold in machines. Thirty states have enacted a snack tax to reduce unhealthy eating. Researchers praise these steps saying habits learned in school carry on throughout adult life. The main reason kids are overweight though is overeating.

While food is improving, kids still need to exercise more. More than two thirds of kids ages 6 to 17 do not participate in vigorous form of exercise such as playing a sport.

Vigorous exercise is defined as any 20 minute activity that causes heavy breathing and sweat. Since exercise is important for developing kids, these statistics are a cause for concern.

With the economy struggling, obesity rates are likely to grow. Nutritious foods are more expensive, and people have difficulty affording those foods. Stress also leads to people stopping their physical activity.

Risk on Obesity

Obesity is not a matter that people should laugh about. Many people in all parts of the world suffer from high risk of developing various health problems. This includes arthritis, incontinence, heart diseases, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, diabetes and even stroke.

Around the globe, the occurrence of obese women is almost double than that of obese men. A lot of studies have shown that in America itself, there are more than one-third of American women which are currently obese. Commonly, these women are members of the minority and of a lower socio-economic status, and middle-aged women are at the highest risk of becoming obese.

Even worse, obesity could also lead to cancer of the gallbladder, breast, endometrium, cervix, pancreas, uterus and ovaries. Reproductive health is also at stake and these women are more likely to face reproductive problems such as infertility, polycystic ovarian syndrome, menstrual irregularities and ovarian cysts.

Moreover, obese women are often the victims of depression.

In this society that stresses the beauty of slenderness and sexiness, women who are obese face substantial social discrimination, even more than obese men. Likewise, obese women also face employment and workplace discrimination. In fact, a recent study shows that formerly obese women who underwent weight loss surgery saw a drop in unemployment from 84 to 64 percent.

Besides all these downsides of being obese, technology is now making way to make their lives more comfortable. A Philippine plastic surgeon said that obese women could always turn to cosmetic or plastic surgeons so you can discuss your weight loss options.

Liposuction could be another option.

There are various surgical procedures that can help obese women such as liposuction together with dieting and exercise. Obese women should not feel less because of their physical appearance. In this technological world, every women has the right to be normal and to be called “beautiful”.

10 Possible Causes of the Obesity Epidemic

Article by Chester Ku-Lea

It’s well accepted that reduced physical activity and fast food are linked to obesity. But the evidence that these are the main causes of obesity is largely circumstantial. To stimulate debate, experts suggest 10 other possible causes of obesity, outlined in the International Journal of Obesity.

1. Sleep debt. Getting too little sleep can increase body weight. Today, many get less shut-eye than ever. 2. Pollution. Hormones control body weight. And many of today’s pollutants affect our hormones. 3. Air conditioning. You have to burn calories if your environment is too hot or too cold for comfort. But more people than ever live and work in temperature-controlled homes and offices. 4. Decreased smoking. Smoking reduces weight. People smoke much less than they used to. 5. Medicine. Many different drugs including contraceptives, steroid hormones, diabetes drugs, some antidepressants, and blood pressure drugs can cause weight gain. Use of these drugs is on the upswing. 6. Population age, ethnicity. Middle-aged people and Hispanic-Americans tend to be more obese than young European-Americans. Americans are getting older and more Hispanic. 7. Older moms. There’s some evidence that the older a woman is when she gives birth, the higher her child’s risk of obesity. Women are giving birth at older and older ages. 8. Ancestors’ environment. Some influences may go back two generations. Environmental changes that made a grandparent obese may “through a fetally driven positive feedback loop” visit obesity on the grandchildren. 9. Obesity linked to fertility. There’s some evidence obese people are more fertile than lean ones. If obesity has a genetic component, the percentage of obese people in the population should increase. 10. Unions of obese spouses. Obese women tend to marry obese men, and if obesity has a genetic component, there will be still more obese people in the next generation.

These other contributing factors deserve more attention and study. Even more explanations include: a fat-inducing virus; increases in childhood depression; less consumption of dairy products; and hormones used in agriculture. What do you think can be attributed to the epidemic?

The Childhood Obesity Epidemic

Article by Misty Stacy

Obesity in children is a serious health problem in the United States. The number of adolescents who are overweight is tripled since 1980 and the prevalence among younger children has more than doubled. American society has become characterized by environments that promote increased food intake, unhealthy foods, and inactivity. There are several things we can blame for this epidemic, but if the truth is told, bad eating habits start at home. Children will not know which foods and eating habits are healthy if the parent doesn’t teach them. Poor nutrition at home and at school set your child up for long term physical and behavioral problems. Excessive time spent in front of the television, using the computer, or playing video games is partly to blame for the escalating rate. An overwhelming five to six hours per day is spent on these sedentary activities by today’s children. Family history can also play a roll for instance, if several of the adults in the family are overweight, chances are the children will be also unless the cycle is broken.

Childhood obesity has severe long term health impacts as well as the immediate problems it causes. Obese children are much more likely to have risk factors for high cholesterol or high blood pressure. Obese youth are more likely to become obese adults and have severe adult diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, or several types of cancer. Furthermore, overweight children are greater risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, as well as social and psychological problems. Some socioeconomic factors are to blame in some cases where children in low income families have fewer resources and less time to make exercise and healthy eating high priorities. Some children use overeating as a way to cope with problems or stress, especially when they see their parents using food that way.

To turn this epidemic around parents need to step in and take action. Limiting television, video games, and such each day and encouraging outdoor activity is certainly a step in the right direction. The best way to encourage outdoor activity is to play with your children outside. We can all use the exercise. Also, for when the weather dictates you stay indoors, make sure you have interactive video games that require the players to get up and move around a bunch. With our hectic lifestyles, more families eat out a lot. Most restaurants, having noticed the ever increasing obesity problem, have added healthier choices to their menus. Encourage the fruit instead of fries and milk instead of soda. Try to cook at home and make healthy meals with lots of fruits and vegetables. A family dinner with everyone at the table is always a plus. Finally, as when any healthy lifestyle, everyone needs a good night sleep.

Morbid Obesity Appears To Be Rising At An Uncontrollable Rate

Article by Donald Saunders

It is no secret that obesity in rising rapidly in many western countries and that the United States is leading the field but what is perhaps not so well known is that the number of those people classed as severely or morbidly obese is growing at twice the rate of obesity in general.

Today more than 30 percent of Americans are overweight with a body mass index (BMI) of between 25 and 29 and another 30 percent are classed as obese with a BMI in excess 30. That means that more than 60 percent of the population of the United States is now classed as being either overweight or obese. This is worrying enough in itself, but the underlying numbers show an even more worrying picture.

Between 2000 and 2005 the proportion of those people classed as being obese with a BMI of greater than 30 rose by just under 25 percent. However, the proportion of those classed as being severely or morbidly obese rose by 50 percent in the same period and the proportion of those often referred to as being ‘super’ obese with a BMI in excess of 50 rose by a staggering 75 percent.

At the same time there has been an explosive growth in the number of bariatric surgeries being performed in the United States. In 1998 bariatric surgery was performed on about 13,000 patients and, by 2006, this figure had risen to more than 200,000.

Today bariatric surgery is being performed in more and more hospitals and surgical centers and, in addition to tradition surgeries such as vertical or sleeve gastrectomy and the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, now encompasses a range of new techniques including such operations as laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding and even robotic gastric surgery. But, despite all of this, morbid obesity continues to rise and now appears to be virtually out of control.

With the well know and often fatal health risks of such things as diabetes and heart disease accompanying obesity one begins to wonder just what it is going to take to stem this rising tide.
