Remember the New York teenagers, Ashley Pelman and Jazlyn Bradley, who sued McDonald’s for making them obese? One of the plaintiffs included a 15-year-old Bronx boy who says he’s been eating McDonald’s food since the age of six. Gregory Rhymes–at 5 feet, 6 inches tall–says he now weighs 400 pounds and has been diagnosed with diabetes. Newsday reported that the children’s parents say they never saw posters in McDonald’s restaurants that explain the nutritional content of the food. William Sears, the author of several books on children and nutrition, commented on this story saying, “The bottom line for the food industry is money. What motivates the food industry and health-minded mothers is worlds apart.” I say, What’s wrong with this picture? What’s wrong is the value of self-determinism that was obviously ignored or disagreed with by these teenagers’ parents. Victimism may be the core issue surrounding obesity outside of a glandular birth defect. Wouldn’t the American Founding Fathers be cringing in embarrassment to find citizens so radically oriented away from the principles of free choice and democratic self-restraint? Of course, children follow the examples of their parents, and eating habits along with moral values begin in the home. That being said, once a heart-and-soul decision has been made to reverse obesity (now defined as overweight by 30 percent of the ideal body weight), as free-choosing citizens here is a list of proven protocols to help start out on that road to recovery and wellness. BehaviorsCurrently Dr. Phil seems to be the champion of the weight-control movement, and his approach is behavioral. One main point that hit home to me was that of support of the household. If those you are living with have a refrigerator full of sweet, high-calorie snack foods, and are indulging in them constantly, it makes the job of sticking to a regimen that much more difficult. On one show, Dr. Phil went so far as to say we should cut-off any relationships in our lives that oppose our weight loss intention. Ultimately, this would mean the entire family would have to be involved in your weight loss program, and respect it because it is your heart’s desire. ExerciseTaking in fewer calories than you burn is the cornerstone of any weight loss strategy. On the average, for every 3,500 calories that we eat over what we need to maintain our weight (regardless of how many days it takes us to do it), we gain a pound. So if your maintenance level is 2,400 calories daily, and you are consuming 2,650 calories daily, you can expect to gain about a half pound or so per week (250 calories/day x 7 days/week divided by 3,500 calories/pound = 0.50 pounds/week). It also works in reverse; for every 3,500 calories under our maintenance requirement that we don’t eat, we lose a pound. Of course, the idea is to figure out ways to increase caloric output and decrease caloric input. So a combination of more than normal exercise coupled with below-maintenance calorie intake insures weight loss. Since the goal is to maximize calorie use (while decreasing calorie intake), what is the most efficient exercise? Experts agree that although aerobic exercise is good for you, it is not the most efficient calorie-burning activity. Muscles burn the most calories of any body system. Therefore, working as many muscles as possible during a workout is the most efficient way to more rapid weight loss. Weight training, martial arts, or yoga are the obvious choices here. But whatever the choice is, it has to be enjoyable and has to produce results, making it much easier to remain on the program. Nutritional SupportThe following are the latest products designed to help the body use calories (increase metabolism), and to use stored fat. Herbal Accelerator and LypoZyme: These enzyme/herbal formulas target the body’s fat utilization strategies. The enzyme lipase is what the body uses to digest fat in the liver, and is the main ingredient in these formulas. Carnitine: It is the “forklift” that carries fat to the mitochondria in cells to be burned. It is an energy facilitating ingredient. In a recent study, Carnitine caused an 11-fold increase in weight loss over a 12-week period. Carnitine also raises HDL (good cholesterol) and lowers triglycerides (precursors to artery blockages) CLA (conjugated linoleic acid): Helps block fat cells from filling up, and increases muscle metabolism creating leaner muscles. Grapefruit: Actively inhibits enzymes in the intestinal tract responsible for converting carbohydrates to fat. It is an excellent source of Vitamin C, potassium and folic acid as well. How to deal with the UK’s growing obesity epidemic

Article by Daniel Harris

The UK population is growing-in more ways than one! Processed foods are easily available and cheap. The family dinner table has disappeared from many homes and normal life has ceased to be energetic. In the 1950s, housework was hard work. Few homes had a washing machine and dishwashers didn’t exist in the UK. Most children played with toys that involved movement or simply played outside the home.

In 2010, dangers from traffic and attackers have led to many children spending their free time sitting at home in front of the TV or electronic computer games. Meals have often involved snacks or a processed meal, quickly reheated in the microwave. As a result 25% of the UK population is obese. This may be a vicious circle since children see their overweight parents in sedentary lifestyles and do not have role models to promote healthier lifestyles to them. This is causing a great burden on the health and benefit systems with obesity causing loss of work, an increased national demand for GP and hospital services, and general malaise.

The obvious answer is to educate the public, set good childhood habits and make healthier foods less expensive and easier to prepare. Unfortunately, this will take a generation before the benefits are to be seen. Positive action is needed now to lose the excess weight before the cardiac and diabetic wards are packed to capacity.

Over the last 10 years there has been an increasing interest in surgery for obesity, also known as bariatric surgery. TV programmes such as Discovery Home & Health’s Fat Doctor have shown morbidly obese patients undergoing keyhole laparoscopic gastric bands and roux en y gastric bypass surgery.TV audiences have watched specialist surgeons Guy Slater and Shaw Somers performing operations that, after a couple of hours, will cure diabetes and see staggering weight losses of up to 20 stone.

Shaw Somers explains, “Obesity is now a fact of life and it’s imperative to stop this time bomb before it’s too late. We treat patients who are housebound and dependent on carers and medication. A year after gastric bypass surgery, they walk into the clinic fitter and healthier than they have ever been, most feeling more confident and happy in their appearance and general wellbeing. It is very rewarding.”

Danny (43) lost 17 stone after undergoing a roux en y gastric bypass surgery with Streamline Surgical. He said “I can’t thank Guy Slater enough. He literally gave me back my life. I was in and out of hospital and needed a machine to keep me breathing at night. I couldn’t leave the house let alone work. Now I am a department manager in ASDA and have just completed a half marathon! I no longer need the 21 tablets I took every day for my diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol and aches.”

Worldwide Obesity Epidemic And What You Can Do About It

Article by Bob Spiro

How to turn back The Childhood Obesity Epidemic

Article by Jeff Dousharm

The prevalence of obesity (BMI?30) continues to be a health concern for adults, children and adolescents in the United States. Data from the most recent NHANES survey1 shows that among adult men the prevalence of obesity was 31.1% in 2003-2004, and 33.3% in 2005-2006, a small but not statistically significant change. Among adult women, the prevalence of obesity in 2003-2004 was 33.2%, and in 2005-2006 was 35.3%, again a small but not significant change. Another recent NHANES survey2 found that obesity prevalence among children and adolescents showed no significant changes between 2003-2004 and 2005-2006. Based on the study, in the combined years of 2003-2006, 16.3% of children and adolescents aged 2-19 years were obese, at or above the 95th percentile of the 2000 BMI-for-age growth charts.

This rate of obesity raises concern because of its implications for the health of Americans. Obesity increases the risk of many diseases and health conditions. These include-* Coronary heart disease * Type 2 diabetes* Cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)* Hypertension (high blood pressure)* Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides) * Stroke * Liver and Gallbladder disease* Sleep apnea and respiratory problems* Osteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint) * Gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility)Two of the Healthy People 2010 national health objectives3 are (1) to reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity among adults to less than 15% and (2) to reduce the prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents to less than 5%. Healthy weight is not a diet: It is a lifestyle.

Whether you want to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight, it’s important to understand the connection between the energy your body takes in (through the foods you eat and the beverages you drink) and the energy your body uses (through the activities you do).

1. Aerobic Activity

Aerobic activity should make up most of your child’s 60 or more minutes of physical activity each day. This can include either moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, or vigorous-intensity activity, such as running. Be sure to include vigorous-intensity aerobic activity on at least 3 days per week.

2. Muscle Strengthening

Include muscle-strengthening activities, such as push-ups, at least 3 days per week as part of your child’s 60 or more minutes.

3. Bone Strengthening

Include bone-strengthening activities, such as jumping rope or running, at least 3 days per week as part of your child’s 60 or more minutes.

How do I know if my child’s aerobic activity is moderate or vigorous intensity?

Here are two ways to think about moderate- and vigorous-intensity:

1. As a rule of thumb, on a scale of 0 to 10, where sitting is a 0 and the highest level of activity is a 10, moderate-intensity activity is a 5 or 6. When your son does moderate-intensity activity, his heart will beat faster than normal and he will breathe harder than normal. Vigorous-intensity activity is a level 7 or 8. When your son does vigorous-intensity activity, his heart will beat much faster than normal and he will breathe much harder than normal.

2. Another way to judge intensity is to think about the activity your child is doing and compare it to the average child. What amount of intensity would the average child use? For example, when your daughter walks to school with friends each morning, she’s probably doing moderate-intensity aerobic activity. But while she is at school, when she runs, or chases others by playing tag during recess, she’s probably doing vigorous-intensity activity.

Some physical activity is better suited for children than adolescents. For example, children do not usually need formal muscle-strengthening programs, such as lifting weights. Younger children usually strengthen their muscles when they play on a jungle gym or climb trees. Make sure you pick a curriculum that includes a variety of age specific activities and games that will develop their martial arts skills as well as strengthen their growing muscles! It can be frustrating to get in the right amount of activities that are age appropriate and in a structured environment. It is possible for your children to stay active and live a fit and healthy lifestyle.

Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery – An Option To Lose Weight

Article by Simon Starkins

Why Undertake Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery?

At present, one of the most common option to treat obesity are weight loss surgeries in which the Laparoscopic obesity surgery also called as bariatric surgery is among them. There are actually many types of surgeries, but the most common and popular are the gastric bypass and the bariatric. In gastric bypass surgery the small pouch on top of the stomach is created with the use of surgical staples, whereas the bariatric surgery use a silicone band as the medical device to create the pouch.

The differences of the two procedures … Well, there is actually not much of difference since they both create a small pouch on top of the stomach. However, they differ in the device they use because surgical staples are semi permanent, redirects a portion of the small intestine and the wound it creates after the operation takes longer time to heal. Unlike the bariatric surgery which uses gastric band instead of staples that’s why the wound heals faster because the band is adjustable, plus it doesn’t redirect any portion in the stomach.

What makes the laparoscopic surgery less invasive?

The laparoscopic obesity surgery is done as an out-patient procedure, that’s why it’s less invasive since it doesn’t have any major incisions. Though it requires more expertise from the surgeon since the entire process is a little complicated. Furthermore, even if it only involves minor incisions, the process of inserting the laparoscopic telescope and putting the band in place needs to be precise.

So why then it is still preferred by many patients and surgeons if it’s complicated? In general it is preferred since laparoscopic obesity surgery yields very minimum complications, the reason why it is safer because the tightness of the band is flexible.

How long does the laparoscopic obesity surgery take?

The laparoscopic obesity surgery procedure only lasts for about thirty minutes to one hour and can be done under general anaesthesia. So the patient is not required to stay in the hospital after the painless surgery.

What’s more, there are many advantages a laparoscopic obesity surgery lap band can give to an individual such as no stapling of the stomach so no painful post-op experiences, a well adjustable and flexible band so the size of the stomach is well calibrated base on the patients needs, very reversible and can be removed anytime, most of all doesn’t create permanent damage in the digestive system.

On the other hand, no matter how safe a procedure is and like any other surgeries it also has disadvantages like nausea and vomiting. When this occur, it only implies that the band is too tight and the body hasn’t adopted it yet. On the other hand, there are also very rare cases when the band creates an infection in the stomach.

Choosing a healthy lifestyle and completely changing your eating habits is really needed.

Being mentally and physically ready during and after the laparoscopic obesity surgery is very important, so you have to know everything before having the surgery.

The Difference between Being Overweight, Obese and Morbidly Obese

Article by Penelope Stone

There is some confusion these days as to what being overweight and being obese really means. Some people refer to a heavy person as being overweight, but that’s not always the case. Many sports professionals, particularly football players, are heavy but aren’t truly overweight. That’s because their body mass index (BMI) is skewed by their muscular build.

BMI is determined by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by their height in meters squared. Since it ties height to weight in relative terms, it is considered a strong indicator of total body fat content.

Using BMI as the gauge, you are considered overweight if you have a body mass index of 25.0 to 29.9. If your BMI is 30.0 to 39.9, you’re clinically obese. Those with a body mass index of 40.0 and more are considered morbidly obese.

Following is an example for a 5’9″ person:Weight Range BMI Considered124 lbs or less Below 18.5 Underweight125 lbs to 168 lbs 18.5 to 24.9 Healthy weight169 lbs to 202 lbs 25.0 to 29.9 Overweight203 lbs or more 30 or higher Obese

Morbid obesity is a serious health issue. It means that a person weighs 50 percent to 100 percent more than their normal weight or that they are over 100 pounds above their normal weight. This condition is life threatening since it can seriously interfere with normal activities as well as natural body processes.

The standards applied to determine who is overweight and who is obese are different for children and teens. While the BMI is calculated the same, the results are compared against children of the same sex and age. If a child falls in the 85th to 95th percentile of their peers, they are considered to be overweight. If they are above the 95th percentile, they are diagnosed as obese. This valuation of BMI allows professionals to take into account differences in body fat at various ages and the different levels of body fat between boys and girls.

Surgical Weight Loss Clinics in Tampa Help Alleviate Obesity Epidemic

As many Americans already know, obesity has become a serious problem in the United States. The number of obese individuals in the US has doubled in the last thirty years and now the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has discovered that roughly 34% of Americans are considered obese. While these numbers are very troubling, there is now evidence that weight loss surgery can play an active role in diminishing the effects of this epidemic. One place where this is evident is Tampa, Florida, where weight loss surgeons have observed tremendous results in their patients.

To be considered obese, one must have a BMI (body mass index) of 30, while morbidly obese individuals have a BMI of 40. Those who are morbidly obese face a higher risk of heart disease, strokes and type-2 diabetes. Most bariatric surgery procedures require a patient to have a BMI of 40 or 35 with comorbidities, although the US.

Food and Drug Administration has recently approved LAP BAND® surgery for those who have a BMI of 30 or greater. In Florida, over 25% of the adult population has a BMI over 30.

Surgeons have noticed dramatic improvements in the health of obese individuals after they have undergone weight loss surgery, and now data from many sources supports their findings. The American Heart Association (AHA) stated in its recent journal Circulation that bariatric surgery, including LAP BAND® surgery, not only substantially reduces the weight of the patient but also lowers their cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Also, a group of scientists now claim that the benefits of weight loss surgery outweigh the risks for many morbidly obese patients.

As with any surgical procedure, people who are interested in weight loss surgery should seek as much information as possible and consult a qualified surgeon. Paul Poirier, chief researcher behind the AHA study, says, “At the moment, bariatric surgery should be reserved for patients who can undergo surgery safely, have severe obesity and have failed attempts at medical therapy.” For those living in the Tampa, FL area, there are several surgical weight loss clinics which provide free informational seminars where a bariatric surgeon can answer questions and address concerns.

Say no to obesity epidemic and have good wellness.

Article by Kurt Truskowski

This is a multifaceted problem and even among wellness pros there are large misunderstandings. These misunderstandings cause a perfect deal of harm to those coping with the problem and, believe it or not, to a number of people who do not have the problem. But it is more important to look on the graver side of obesity that is towards the wellness complications that obesity can bring over. Losing out on your weight, you not only boost your self-confidence but additionally cut down the risks of the severe health complications that you can suffer from. Below are a few health complications that obesity can lead to.

Obesity is normally considered to be a cosmetic problem, which is not real. It is truly an extremely severe and serious wellness condition, which is located to alter people of all ages. Even juvenal children are found to have developed obesity over the years. Many of them acquire the obesity traits out of genetic hereditary, which is considered to be a primary factor responsible for causing obesity apart from the current lifestyle. People who are obese are many times worried or feel conscious regarding their physical appearance. For decades, there have been charts that explain based upon height, gender and age, what a people should weigh. An adult woman with a mini frame should, according to many charts weigh between 95 and 100 pounds – depends on the chart. Flight Attendants and women in other appearance-based industries were regularly censored or reprimanded in a few way if they gained weight beyond what the charts dictated.

There is a problem with this. Cholesterol is a fatty substance, which is made in your liver from the fat that is absorbed from the food that you eat. Cholesterol is fundamental for building cell membranes and production of sex and steroid hormones in your body. But cholesterol as such cannot travel around your body individually, and so it takes the assist of lipoproteins for performing its functions. Suppose one of these women got truly active in a sport or a number of another highly physical activity. Her muscle mass would increase which indicates her weight would boost. According to the charts, she should be considered overweight, when, in reason, she was as healthy and likely reduced fat than certain of the people whose weight was inside the acceptable range.

Another concept of determining if one is overweight has emerged–the Body Mass Index or BMI, which uses an individual’s height and weight. This is not completely different from the charts as it still determines a person’s number of body fat by height and weight. When bad cholesterol reaches the cells, it increases the amount of cholesterol in your blood, and the good cholesterol reduces the cholesterol amount in your body. If bad cholesterol amount in your body increases, it can cause the condition known as high cholesterol.

This condition can lead to several alternative wellness complications such as atherosclerosis, heart attack, stroke, angina, high blood workload and peripheral arterial disease. If you are obese, you are at a higher risk of developing high cholesterol, which is why it is fundamental to treat obesity on time. You can take the aid of slimming pills that are attainable on the market for treating obesity. A basic determination of a person’s BMI is determined by his or her body weight splitted by the square of his or her height. In short if your body mass is under 19, you are under weight, 19 to 25 best weight, 25 to 30 overweight, 30 to 40 obese and over 40 morbidly obese. Again, this does not make allowances for the people who may have additional muscle mass, and hence weigh additional. Additional muscle mass makes you more, not lower healthy.

Now there are consumer goods that assize your body’s actual fat composition. This is called the Bioelectrical Impedance Method. In reality it is fat and excess fluids you want to lose. Body and muscle tissue have multiple levels of electrical conductivity. There are scales that assize the quantity of fat in your body by sending a tiny, surely safe electrical current out of your body. You don’t feel a thing. Osteoarthritis is a common joint problem, which is commonly known to change older people. In this condition, the cartilage gets worn away, since of which your bones rub with each alternative. This can cause severe joint pain and limited movement of your joints. If you are obese, extra workload is exerted on your joints and cartilage, which causes faster tattering of the cartilage.

When a person is obese, the joints that can experience maximum workload are knees, hips and lower back. On losing your weight, you can aid decrease the workload exerted on these joints, in turn reducing the risk of suffering from osteoarthritis. Your percentage of body fat is calculated. We every need a certain amount of fat to be healthy. Using your gender, age, weight and height, these offerings can give you extra precise and confident facts to assist you set and reach your goals.

Obesity Surgery India ? Fitter or Fatter?

As per many surveys conducted in the country, obesity has reached epic proportions in India in the 21st century. There are many factors that are said to have been contributing to this. As per the National Family Health Survey held in 2007, Punjab and Kerala were found to have the most number of obesity cases with 30.3 and 24.3% percent in men and 37.5 and 34% in women.Obesity is not a lethal disease by itself, but is a serious risk factor that may lead to a range of serious non-communicable diseases. Studies have indicated links to coronary heart diseases, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and gallstone.

There have been links of certain cancers to obesity. As there is a rise in obesity due to inactivity, there is also a hormonal change and imbalance and the fat cells form a path to tumor growth and levels of inflammation.

Both pancreatic and kidney cancer have been linked to excess fat and sedentary lifestyle and their rates have increased to 1.1 and 3 percent respectively. While smoking has been attributed as a cancer causative, in the future, even obesity and lack of physical activity will be attributed with the same.Around 20 per cent of school-going children are overweight. Various types of cancers in women like breast cancer and uterus cancer, menstrual disorder and infertility are caused by obesity.Obesity Surgery India has therefore become essential to the people. Generally, these weight loss surgeries are done by reducing the size of the stomach by removing a portion, by implanting a device or by re-routing the small intestines. These surgeries can be malabsorptive, resistive or mixed procedures. In malabsorptive processes, either a portion of the stomach is cut and then the intestine connected to it or an impermeable sleeve is inserted into the intestine that prevents absorption food.

Resistive Obesity Surgery India is of many types. Vertical banded gastroplasty, a part of the stomach is permanently stapled while in adjustable gastric band, an adjustable silicone band is used to reduce the size of the stomach. Sleeve gastrectomy deals with permanent reduction in stomach size while intragastric balloon deals with inserting a deflated balloon into the stomach and then inflating it to reduce the usable volume. Gastric plication involves suturing the stomach to create a sleeve that gives restriction. Mixed procedures make use of both the resistive and malabsorptive techniques together.
